What is gender balance?
Gender balance programmes aim to ensure gender diversity and a balanced composition of women and men in the workplace – especially in decision-making positions.
Why is gender balance needed?
Despite representing the majority of the global population, and being responsible for 85% of purchasing decisions, women are dramatically underrepresented in global corporates. It’s not only bad for women – but bad for business. Study after global study has shown that gender diversity is great for the bottom line – boosting profits and success in the marketplace. Research confirms that businesses with more senior female executives experience less fraud, boast better return on investment and reflect improved innovation and complex problem solving.
What is the state of gender diversity?
Only 26% of South African senior management positions are currently filled by women and 21% of local businesses have no women at all in senior management positions.
In South Africa, 15% of boards are made up of women. At the current rate of appointment of women to senior roles in business, it will take 153 years for women to occupy 50% of leadership positions in South Africa, a fact that highlights the need for women’s leadership development.

What does Abbellard do?
- We analyse your policies, practices and environment that may restrict gender diversity and limit women’s successes. We then offer solutions for change and improved gender balance that strategically align with your goals.
- We facilitate dialogue between the genders: These deep dialogues can help staff better understand and support each other across the gender line in your organisation.
- We create development programmes to enhance leadership: Women’s lives are often more complicated than men’s, with competing family and work demands. We help them find balance; empowering them to strive for and achieve more.
